Welcome to GamerMates!

How Does This Work?

GamerMates is a pro-mental health gaming community. We’ve made it super easy to find like-minded people (your gamermates!) who you can play your favourite video games with. You can find local folk, or someone on the other side of the world. You can play anything from Overwatch to Animal Crossing.

What you decide to do is your choice – with an understanding that everyone here is supportive of each other.

I Don’t Feel Like Opening Up.

That’s totally okay. We’re not here to tell you to share personal information. For many people, just having friends they can hang out with in a place they know to be safe and supportive is enough to get them through a tough time. For others, they might want to find someone to chat to, and if you both agree to it, that’s great! GamerMates is there for you.

Are There Counsellors at GamerMates?

Not yet. If this goes well we are hoping to look into getting volunteers who are mental health trained to act as supportive game buddies.

What Does Pro-Mental Health Mean?

It means you understand that everybody has mental health, that everybody has strengths, and vulnerabilities, and you respect and support that. It means you are interested in improving your own wellbeing, and helping others, by being part of a supportive community here at CheckPoint. This is designed to be a group of people who all benefit emotionally and socially through the power of games – and one another.

What If Someone Says Something I Don’t Like?

Please end the game session and discuss this with a mod as soon as possible. Remember to include the person’s CheckPoint username.

Where Do We Meet?

You can chat on our group forums, our Steam group, in our Discord channel, or in game. Once you sign up, you’ll see the Discord Widget to the right here  and you can introduce yourself to people in groups. Why not try the search tool? You can find gamermates playing what you like, when you are awake – then join them in games and the forums.

The Rules

“Do”s

These are things we intend this community to be.

  • Be kind, friendly, welcoming and respectful.
  • Play games – coop, competitively, in teams or in twos, whichever feels right for you.
  • Chat about games, movies, life, or anything you’d like to – as long as it is inoffensive and inclusive.
  • Set boundaries – if you don’t want to talk about personal things, it is your responsibility to let your gamermates know.
  • Respect other’s boundaries – if you do want to talk about things, it is your responsibility to ask your gamermates if they feel comfortable doing that.
  • Share mental health resources that you think might be helpful to others, from reputable sources (use your judgement).
  • Share your coping skills, to help others with their own.
  • Make sure to report anybody breaking the rules.

“Be Mindful Of”s

These are things that some people are okay with, and others aren’t. Use your discretion and ask your gamermates what they are comfortable with.

  • Sharing personal experiences that might be triggering. This includes anything around trauma, violence, sexual experiences, etc.
  • We have to report it if you say something that implies you are thinking of harming yourself, or somebody else.

“Never”s

These are the things a gamermate should never do. Being seen breaking these rules will result in your immediate expulsion from the group and the cancellation of any membership you have.

  • Trolling (insulting or otherwise being provocative for no reason)
  • Making fun of, excluding, insulting or otherwise singling out any player because of their religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, political beliefs, abilities, or any other personal characteristic.
  • Using speech that stigmatise or trivialise mental illness or sufferers of mental illness.
  • Bullying others.
  • Knowingly sharing information that could be harmful (first offences will get a warning).
